    How We Help

Imagine knowing that anytime you spiral into thoughts of impending doom and self-doubt, that you have the tools and skills to escape them. You are now empowered with resiliency and self-help. All aspects of your life are enriched!

We at Key CBT Counseling can help you acquire the knowledge, teach you the skills, and guide you in implementing them into your daily life with evidence-based therapeutic techniques.

For our adult clients, the learning and practical application of CBT skills, along with evidence-based mindfulness techniques, provide immediate and lasting relief. The plague of anxious thoughts, worries and stress diminish and confidence in self is strengthened and restored.

We help adolescents and teens suffering with school anxiety, social anxiety, OCD, panic attacks and ADD with Cognitive Behavioral Therapeutic techniques augmented with mindfulness training and interactive neuro-bio-feedback. All of our clients engage in fun, interactive learning that helps with managing and calming their anxiety and worries while building greater focus and control.

Our treatment protocol focuses on problem solving. It is usually shorter termed with the goal of empowering you to learn to help yourself and in essence, to become your own counselor.

The main components of this holistic approach include knowledge about the physiological components of anxiety (fight, flight, freeze response). Clients gain greater self-awareness along with the ability to challenge unhelpful, automatic thoughts and distorted beliefs. Focus is on empowering you to be in control of your mind and body with techniques that facilitate calm breath and muscle relaxation for immediate relief. It is a collaborative-style treatment where the goals are determined by you, and where we work together to achieve those goals.

Homework in the form of writing, reading, or behavior assignments is typically a part of this treatment protocol and aids in the progression of self-confidence, reducing anxiety symptoms which will result in optimal functioning.

We can help you gain the knowledge, assist you with learning the skills, guide you on how to implement them, and accompany you on the journey, but you need to participate and engage in the work. No one wants to be stuck in the cycle of worry. You are taking the steps. You are now ready to find the peace and joy that you want and deserve. You are on your way to feeling better—forever!

    We employ Evidence-Based treatments:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) works on the premise that how we think affects how we feel, and how we feel determines our behavior. Each of us in the course of living our lives will be triggered to feel and respond to a particular situation.

What is often overlooked is how our “thoughts” and what we tell ourselves generates the feelings and interpretations that disturb us. In CBT we learn the process of examining our thoughts and to determine whether they are useful, helpful, or even factual. This is a learning that anyone can master and once learned, it cannot be un-learned.

Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) is based on the idea that we all have certain, individual beliefs that drive our thoughts, which generate feelings and affect how we behave. We are intelligent beings that can re-examine ideas born from our pasts and determine if those long-held beliefs are working for us today. Unlike our prehistoric ancestors, we have a pre-frontal cortex with which to process, analyze and change.

Solution-Focused Therapy’s premise is that, for the most part, individuals on some level know what works and what doesn’t. Exploring and dissecting our struggles and difficulties often reveals an innate knowing of answers to the questions we seek. It’s about honoring what’s working and doing more of that, and less of what’s not working, replacing it with something that does.

Mindfulness training works by increasing our awareness and developing emotional intelligence (EQ). Being cognizant of how we feel, think and react to events, and in any given situation, is essential to having control of our emotions and not allowing our emotions control us. Feeling out of control leads to a feeling of anxiety and panic, and uncontrolled anxiety is detrimental to our physical and psychological health. Learning how to be aware of our thoughts, feelings and behaviors is the cornerstone of emotional well-being. That awareness can be taught and developed to provide peace and harmony. It is not difficult. Anyone can do it. It is not about clearing your mind. It is about developing focus and control, which have benefits that are far reaching and long lasting.

Neuro-bio-feedback is a fun and effective way to reinforce the learning and skills taught in these evidence-based treatments. A non-intrusive, lightweight headband and interactive software combine to reinforce the connection between mind and body, and help train you to quiet negative thoughts and improve focus, concentration, and relaxation. In conjunction with other therapy, Neuro-bio-feedback can be especially effective with youths and adolescents.
